Sabal: Inner Strength
Over the last 35 years HRDC has performed life-changing surgery and rehabilitation for more than 96,000 poor disabled children. In Nepal disability is viewed as a curse, and many children are kept isolated at home. HRDC’s vast network of Community Based Rehabilitation workers identify the most marginalized children, who are then given world-class surgical interventions, rehabilitation, and long-term follow up back in their villages. With newfound abilities and confidence, children’s lives are transformed. At the local level, the Community Based Rehabilitation workers dispel harmful myths of disability, paving the way for an inclusive society.
This innovative and strategic model of care for a low-resource country is a blueprint for excellence and collaboration to benefit children all over the world. HRDC’s model will continue to be scaled further in Nepal and can be replicated in other countries. Sabal Foundation will be a catalyst – to build international networks, mobilize global support for HRDC, and create a comprehensive platform for engagement.
In Nepali, Sabal means inner strength, reflecting both the courage and fortitude of children who overcome intractable obstacles as well as the extraordinary vision and compassion of Dr. Banskota and HRDC.
